Gold is often seen as a safe haven during market turmoil, such as what we’re seeing as a consequence of Trump’s war on Iran. Christopher Stiegeler, Director of EBC Financial Group, explores why investors and central banks turn to gold in uncertain times.

Stiegeler explains that there are several reasons why investors buy gold. One reason is as a geopolitical hedge against uncertainty. Another reason is concern about a government’s finances or stability. Gold may also be the most attractive option among a basket of asset classes, none of which are particularly attractive at the moment.

Stiegeler notes that gold investors may not necessarily believe the economy is collapsing. Instead, they may seek an asset that doesn’t depend on a single currency, company, or country.

Central banks have been consistently buying gold, with the World Bank reporting that central banks purchased around 290 tonnes in the last quarter. Close to 50% of central banks surveyed said that they continued to be adding to their gold stocks over the coming year.

Stiegeler suggests that central banks are focused on diversification rather than a specific market outlook.

The current gold rally may be a temporary reaction to the Iran conflict or part of a larger shift in how investors view risk. If geopolitical tensions persist and interest rates rise, gold may remain attractive.

Conversely, if tensions ease, crude oil prices drop, and interest rates fall, gold’s appeal may diminish due to its lack of interest payments. As Stiegeler puts it, it’s a trade-off between fear and opportunity cost.
