Treasurer Jim Chalmers spoke at the Super Members Council Super Summit.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has stated that superannuation will be “front and centre” of Australia’s economy, playing a key role in addressing the country’s intergenerational pressures. In a speech to the Super Members Council Super Summit, Chalmers highlighted the importance of superannuation in ensuring a sustainable future for Australia.

Chalmers’ comments come in response to the One Nation super proposal, which would allow individuals paying rent or a mortgage to divert a quarter of their future super contributions into their take-home pay for up to three years. The proposal has sparked debate about the role of superannuation in Australia’s economy.

Intergenerational Report Findings

The latest Intergenerational Report findings indicate that the number of Australians over Age Pension age will almost double to around 9 million by 2066. However, the report also shows that the share of older Australians receiving a pension or income support payment is expected to fall, from 66% last year to 52% by 2066.

This reduction in Age Pension expenditure is attributed to the growing importance of superannuation in supporting retirement incomes. Chalmers noted that if Age Pension expenditure in Australia was still at 2.3% in 2065-66, the annual bill would be $31 billion higher in today’s dollars. Furthermore, the report’s findings are significant when compared to other countries, such as the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and the US, which are expected to have higher percentages of GDP spent on Age and service pensions by 2060.

Superannuation and Retirement Incomes

The median retirement age balance is set to approach $450,000 over the next decade, a significant increase from the current $200,000. Drawdowns from superannuation are also projected to double to around 6% of GDP by 2066.

Chalmers emphasized that the $4 trillion super pool is a key driver of growth in foreign income inflows, supporting Australia’s gross national income. Superannuation is not only boosting retirement incomes but also helping to unlock investment, reduce reliance on the pension, and strengthen international relationships. The growth of the super pool is expected to have a positive impact on the economy, as it will provide a significant source of funding for investments and help to deepen Australia’s capital markets.

Reforms and Consultations

The Government is currently working on a set of reforms to ensure super is working in members’ best interests. This includes reforms on consumer protection advice and compensation, as well as consultation on the Performance Test.

Chalmers also announced that the Government will soon open up consultation on innovative income streams regulations, allowing funds to offer product features like money back guarantees and purchasing in instalments. This aims to provide fairer treatment for couples and support retirees in drawing on their superannuation savings with more confidence. The consultation process will be key in shaping the future of superannuation, as it will help to identify areas where improvements can be made and ensure that the system is working effectively for all members.

Chalmers warned that the One Nation proposal poses a significant threat to compulsory super, and that the next election will be a critical moment in determining the future of superannuation in Australia.

Chalmers’ comments highlight the importance of superannuation in addressing Australia’s intergenerational challenges, and the need for careful consideration of any proposed changes to the system.

They will play a key part in shaping the future of superannuation.

The Government’s reforms and consultations are ongoing.

Superannuation remains a vital component of Australia’s economy.

It is expected to continue playing a key role in supporting retirement incomes.

The superannuation system has undergone significant changes since its introduction, and it is likely that further reforms will be necessary to ensure its continued effectiveness. The Government’s commitment to consultation and reform is a positive step towards ensuring that the system is working in the best interests of its members.
